Tomball History
From Farmland to Railway Expansion
In the 1800s Tomball was mostly dirt and acres upon acres of farmland as far as the eye could see. This fertile land had plenty of rain for farming, and plenty of space to raise cattle. Many traveled from Europe to see these beautiful lands for themselves and to settle in with their families. The lush forests that surrounded the farmlands were a happy reminder of the forests back home but with the freedom they so eagerly sought.
Originally this wonderful place full of potential growth, was a grant from the Republic of Texas. In 1838 the land grant was given to William Hurd’s heirs and prosperity was well on its way. At this time, the town was lovingly known as Peck which was named after a prominent chief civil engineer on the railroad line. The Railway boom began and engineers realized that Peck was the best spot for a train depot since it was ideally between Fort Worth and Galveston Texas. Since this town was between the low hills of Texas, the topography made it easier to load more cargo onto each rail car since it was slightly sloped.
With everything beginning to expand and grow, an attorney named Thomas Henrry Ball was credited for the town becoming a bustling hub of commerce. In his honor on December 2, 1907, the town was changed from Peck to Tomball by the Valley Route Townesite & Loan Co. It was then that it began developing into an agricultural rail center. Tomball had a telegraph office, freight terminal, section houses, stock pens, saloons, water station and more. In 1908 as everything began to progress, the Post Office was built along with it’s very first educational facility. Up until 1914, the population grew to 350 residents who enjoyed their first general store ran by Charles Hoffman, as well as 6 hotels and two cotton gins.
The Oil Boom of 1933
Things were already booming with the railway train stop, the steady rise of commerce, and people moving in to make Tomball their new home. In May of 1933, things quickly changed for the economy of their town when geophysical prospecting predicted oil was nearby and ready to be discovered. On the 27th day their predictions were absolutely right as drillers struck oil 5,000 feet down on the property of J.F.W Kob which was located on the west side of Tomball.
As the railway business was fading into the background, the oil business was alive and well drawing in a new rise in the population. The oil companies gained quite a bit of interest in this otherwise, small town hub. With over 2,750,000 barrels of oil being produced and more on the way, around 30 oil companies found a place in Tomball which nearly tripled the residents and gave jobs to many.
One of the best known companies is ExxonMobil but was known then as Humble Oil & Refining. They built a 644 acre camp for housing for employees and recreational facilities as well. In 1935 Humble Oil & Refining made an incredible deal with residents by providing natural gas and water completely free of charge in order to have drilling rights there. This put Tomball on the map in a major way, and even in to the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not since the utilities were free and no cemetery was anywhere to be found nearby. This agreement held until 1988. With the incredibly oil boom, Tomball was then known as Oiltown USA

One thing can be said of living in Bridgeland, there is never a shortage of things to do here from sunup to sundown. One of the centrally focused places of interest is Dragonfly Park. This park seemingly has it all. Twenty-five acres of fun-filled leisure such as a fitness center, a lazy river with a beach entry, a spray pad for the kids, flex rooms, tennis courts and so much more. With over 60 miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails surrounding the park, anyone looking to connect with nature will have ample opportunities to do so.
