Spring, Texas – History
When you think of the city of Spring currently, a substantial Northern subsection of Houston definitely comes to mind with several areas combined to make up this large and diverse community. Located in Harris County this significant piece of land was not even recognized until the mid-1800s when the railroads were being built. Up until that point, Spring Texas was just another place for the tribes to go hunting, fishing, and live very peacefully.
The development and growth of Spring Texas can be attributed to various factors, one of which is the presence of skilled professionals catering to the needs of the community. Originally, this large plot of land in East Texas was inhabited by quite a few Indian tribes who called this land their home. One of the tribes that comes to mind is the Orcoquiza Tribe. Although many considered this tribe to be peaceful in general, the Spanish settlers described them as the ones who gave them more trouble than they bargained for.
Another tribe known to be in the general area was the Akokisa tribe. This tribe was known to settle in warmer regions and also enjoyed their fair share of fishing like the others. Their canoe-making skills were also greatly known along with a few sordid habits as well; cannibalism. Not wanting to create trouble, the Spanish desired to settle near the inhabitable lands and rivers too. In order to create peace, the Spanish began to build missionaries in the hopes that they would not incite a war or become a meal.
In 1836, when Texas won its independence from Mexico, it was decided that the town of Spring would emerge by the Texas General Council of the Provisional Government. Once the trading posts of William Piermont went up and the Great Northern Railroad made its way through the land and the German immigrants moved in. Initially, this was great for trade with the Orcoquiza tribe but not so great for the Akokisas who had great barriers with their language.
Unfortunately, this resulted in most of the tribes being forced out as commerce grew. Even the most peaceful tribes can react in the harshest ways if asked to leave a place they’ve always loved and called home. This led to the theories of Spring being a cursed Indian land and also led to some of the most interesting ghost stories in history. Although these stories are pure speculation to some, it has been an incredible draw with ghost tours and history tours here even today.
Spring, Texas – German Immigration
When it comes to the history of Spring Texas, everyone has heard of the name Wunsche. This all started first with two entrepreneurial German immigrants named Gustav Bayer (also known as Gus) and Carl Wunshche in the early 1940s. Gus Bayer was looking for land to farm and settled in the Spring area with his wife Metha, his 2 loving sons, and his mother Bertha. Carl came with his brother to do the same and the history of Old Town Spring began to illuminate with the spirit of businesses beginning to emerge.
Carl Wunsche came from Saxony and brought his cotton to Charlie & Dell Wunsche’s hotel/saloon/brothel. They built this saloon with their own wood from their very own sawmill. Charles also had his own gin, so it made sense to incorporate it into his establishment. This is just another reason why the Wunsche name has always been so well known. The Wunsche Bros made names for themselves with multiple businesses which essentially launched the town of Spring into a place on the map you’d aim to visit. Even to this day, you can visit the Wunsche Bros Restaurant, various schools that bear the name, and more.
Spring, Texas – The Great Northern Railroad
In 1871, the railroads began to expand and people could easily travel from Ft. Worth to Dallas and back to Spring Texas. With the railroad came expanded commerce, population growth, and even a bit of trouble. There were around 200 rail workers and jobs were everywhere to be found. This town thrived on the business the railroad brought with it.
With Old Town Spring (only known as Spring back then) becoming a saloon town, however, crime became rampant. This sparked a lot of controversy among the 1200 residents that built homes there. Eventually, the population even began to dwindle to nearly a mere 300 people which was quite a drastic dip from before.
Criminals could easily catch the train, breeze into town, and hop on the train right out without always being caught. Even Bonnie & Clyde caught wind that Spring was an easy target. The Spring State Bank was opened in 1912 and became quite the destination for robberies. With Bonnie & Clyde successfully robbing the bank and leaving their mark (bullet holes in the walls), Spring began laying down the law with harsher punishments and judges who had a zero-tolerance policy. This began to draw back in residents who in turn felt quite a bit safer.
Old Town Spring – Today
Today Old Town Spring is part of Spring Texas that maintains its sweet southern charms. With over 150 shops and small businesses, residents here love to spend their days browsing the various knickknacks, exploring the variety of restaurants, and even stopping at the candy shops. If you enjoy art, Old Town Spring has quite a bit of that as well.
What’s even more fascinating is that many of the original shops and buildings still stand. This makes many of them well over 100 years old or more. With such a variety of antique shops and such a deep-rooted history, Old Town Spring hosts a variety of events that draw in guests from all around the United States. The Old Town Spring Ghost Walk is led by Penny Dreadful who has many tales of this history here that aren’t told anywhere else. During the holiday seasons, this beautiful section of Spring is a sight to behold and has such an intriguing charm for all to enjoy.

They are Conroe Independent School District, Klein Independent School District, Spring Independent School District, Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District, and Tomball Independent School District. Spring schools have boasted of providing some of the best education to their students while focusing on student safety, especially in the last several years. In 2023 alone, Spring ISD had over 2,000 students who walked proudly across that stage and onto new horizons.

One thing you won’t hear from anyone in Spring Texas is that there isn’t enough to do. If you are a fan of the great outdoors, visitors can check out the tremendous variety of parks and walking trails to explore. Meyer Park for example has 180 acres to explore for sports lovers with soccer fields, softball fields, and even a basketball court. For those who aren’t much for sports, there are many play areas for children and even sections lined out with grills for families who want to host an event.
For those who’d prefer to stay out of the weather but still enjoy remaining active, Inspire Rock Indoor Climbing & Team Building Center has quite an amount of activities to keep you occupied.
