Uptown Galleria Houston: The Heart of Luxury, Business, and Urban Elegance

Introduction

When you want the feeling of being downtown in the big city but want luxury and an upbeat experience, Houstonians find themselves in the Galleria area. The Galleria area, also known as Uptown to many, is a hub of retail shopping haven for many. Centered around the Galleria Mall, the 7th largest mall in the United States, the Uptown Galleria has become a fast-paced community that draws in shoppers, business moguls, visitors, and residents seeking a Texas neighborhood that has it all.

History and Development of Greater Uptown Houston

Origins of the Uptown Galleria Area: How It Began

Houston has always had a diverse landscape from the high-rise commerce of downtown to the suburban neighborhoods expanding well over 665 miles wide. They say everything is bigger in Texas so it just made sense to give Texans the Texas-size mall they needed. In November 1970, that was exactly what happened. The Galleria Mall began its development and greater uptown was on the way!

Gerald D Hines had a vision where commerce met luxury and business would begin to boom.  With the Galleria mall becoming the center of business and retail, Houstonians from the River Oaks, Montrose, Memorial, and Afton Oaks area could all find themselves immersed with opulence and with even more options for fine dining right around the corner from their homes. With Uptown already becoming established in the 1960s, the Galleria Mall development meant more housing was on the way, more business, and incredible economic growth for Houston.

Key Milestones in Uptown Galleria’s Growth

  • 1948: Uptown was established and only expanded 3 miles
  • 1960s: Property in Uptown began to develop
  • 1969: Neiman Marcus became the anchor store for the Galleria and opened on January 28.
  • 1970: The Houston Galleria was established, marking a turning point in the district’s rise.
  • 1980s-1990s: The area saw rapid commercial growth, with corporate offices and high-end residences moving in.
  • 2000s-Present: Uptown continues to expand with major infrastructure projects, luxury residential developments, and business investments.

Influence of The Houston Galleria on Uptown’s Rise

For over 50 years, the Galleria area has grown from a small area to pass through, to a marketplace of indulgence for the upper class and middle class alike. Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, the word Galleria means a place with exhibitions and works of art. There is no better description to fit this incredible area; a work of art.

With the mall bringing in new businesses, commerce, and retail shoppers, consumers needed more. Uptown needed a more scenic feel to complete the work of art so in 1999 a gorgeous 17-acre park was created for all to enjoy as they worked and shopped. To add to this incredible beauty and green space, an amazing waterwall was added to draw in even more visitors as well as giving residents a calming space to work as well as unwind. This was built 64 feet high as a tribute to the Williams Tower which is 64 stories high and named after the area’s founder, the Gerald D Hines Waterwall Park.

With plenty of places to shop, work, dine, and more the greater Uptown Galleria area has continued to grow and boom. In 2014, a 1.2 billion dollar renovation plan was put in place to redevelop Uptown Park to accommodate more shopping and dining for the growing population of Houston. This included a high-rise residential tower to draw in even more residents to call this incredible space home.

Business and Economy: The Powerhouse of Houston’s Commercial Scene

Some consider the uptown area the heart of Houston; in this heart, the beat of it all comes from the incredible businesses that thrive there. The business district of the Uptown Galleria area continues to thrive with major corporations, high-end retailers, and workspaces all in one. With building marvels like the 901-foot tall Williams Tower housing Transco Energy and the Consulate General of Denmark, it’s no wonder why over a million visitors have been drawn here to conduct business.
