History

Spring Branch is well known for being one of Houston’s oldest neighborhoods. As a matter of fact, In the 1800s German settlers fled terrible conditions back in their homeland looking for a new place to call home. One German immigrant, in particular, Karl Kobe, was the first to settle in the Bayou area to establish roots and begin building.

The first thing he built was a log cabin on the banks of the creek. It was then and there as he gazed at the natural spring water flowing majestically, that he was inspired to name the area Spring Branch. This name remains still today.

Other familiar family names that made this incredible area their home were Gessner, Bauer, Hilendahl, Blalock, Fries, and more. Many of these names even remain there today as street names and can be found in other places as well. Some even came together to form St. Peter’s United Church, the second oldest church in Houston.

This church has great importance to Houston because of the tremendous impact it represents. Even the Spring Branch School Society was sponsored by them while the ministry was actually teaching classes. This eventually evolved into a school district known today as Spring Branch ISD.

Much of this land was known as farmland until the 1950s. It housed lumber mills, sawmills, dirt roads, and homes that began this beautiful community. After the post-war area, Spring Branch saw the rise of the industrial revolution, and shopping centers, neighborhoods, and more schools began their construction. In 1957 Spring Branch was finally annexed into Houston and is still a tremendous part of it today.
